A man on the bus today, having just awoken after a shift as a nightclub bouncer, was expressing amazement to another woman that the clientele at the club were willing to spend $30 on a cover charge and a couple of drinks. It seemed like an incredible waste to him, and the fact that they were able to do it all was evidence of how rich they actually were. $30 was a sum he could ill afford to spare when he had rent obligations, food costs, and hospital and auto repair bills to pay.
I think that a lot of those furious at the 1% are silly and nearly as privileged, and men like the one on the bus help confirm that. To a lot of people, my life is something to be envied and cause for astonishment. It’s good to remember that every now and then.
